First Rate Plumbing Heating & Cooling Joins Run for the Zoo 2026

The 39th Annual Run for the Zoo is back on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at the ABQ BioPark Zoo in Albuquerque. This year’s theme, “Cruisin’ Route 66,” brings a fun, nostalgic twist to one of the city’s most loved community events.

At First Rate Plumbing Heating & Cooling, we’re excited to be a sponsor of this year’s Run for the Zoo and to be part of supporting wildlife conservation, education, and animal care in our community.

Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just looking for a fun way to spend time with family, this event welcomes participants of all ages and fitness levels.

Even better, every mile you complete helps support wildlife conservation, education, and animal care at the ABQ BioPark Zoo.

Race Options and Event Details

One of the best things about Run for the Zoo is that there’s truly something for everyone.

Participants can choose from several race options depending on their pace and experience level.

Half Marathon (7:00 AM Start)

Designed for more experienced runners, the Half Marathon is the longest distance offered during the event. It’s perfect if you’re looking for a challenge and want to fully experience the course. For safety, this event is for runners only and follows a set time limit.

10K Timed Run (8:00 AM Start)

The 10K Timed Run offers a strong middle-ground distance. It’s a great choice for runners building endurance or aiming to improve their pace while still enjoying the community atmosphere.

5K Timed Run (9:30 AM Start)

The 5K Timed Run is one of the most popular events and features a wave start based on pace. This helps keep the course organized and gives runners a smoother experience.

5K Fitness Run/Walk (10:15 AM Start)

For a more relaxed option, the 5K Fitness Run/Walk is ideal for families, casual walkers, and weekend joggers. It’s non-competitive and designed for all ages to enjoy at their own pace.

1 Mile Fun Run/Walk (11:00 AM Start)

The 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk offers a unique experience through the zoo itself. Participants get to travel along paths near animal habitats, making it especially fun for kids and families.

Registration opens in phases, with early registration offering the best pricing. Spots can fill up quickly due to event capacity, so signing up early is the best way to secure your place.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should you register?

It’s best to register early to secure your spot and take advantage of lower pricing. As the event gets closer, registration phases change, and prices typically increase. Some race categories may also fill up, so planning ahead helps avoid last-minute stress.

Is late registration or race day registration available?

Late registration begins around April 10, with updated pricing depending on availability. If the event does not sell out, in-person registration may be offered during packet pick-up days or on race day. Since space can be limited, registering in advance is still the safest option.

Where and when is packet pick-up?

Packet pick-up will take place at the GAAR Event Center, located at 1635 University Blvd NE in Albuquerque. It is scheduled for Friday, May 1 and Saturday, May 2 from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This is where participants can collect their bib number, timing tag (for timed races), event shirt, and other race materials.

Can you pick up a packet for someone else?

Yes, participants are generally allowed to pick up race packets for others. You’ll just need basic details like their name and the event they registered for. This makes it easier for families or groups to prepare ahead of race day.

What if you can’t make it to packet pick-up?

If you’re unable to attend packet pick-up, materials are usually available on race day. However, there is typically a cutoff time before each race begins, so arriving early is important. Planning ahead can help ensure a smooth start to your event.

Will there be water and rest stations along the course?

Yes, water stations and portable restrooms are typically set up along each course. Longer races tend to have more stations, while shorter routes still include basic support. You’ll also find facilities near the start and finish areas.

Is the event kid-friendly?

Yes, the event is designed to be family-friendly with multiple race options for different ages and activity levels. The 5K Fitness Run/Walk and 1 Mile Fun Run are especially great for families with younger participants. It’s a fun way to get active together while supporting a local cause.

What is the cancellation and refund policy?

The event is expected to take place rain or shine, so participants should plan accordingly. Registration fees are typically non-refundable, though some events may allow transfers to another participant. In many cases, proceeds go directly toward supporting the ABQ BioPark and its programs.
