Most Common Furnace Problems and How to Deal With Them

You turn your thermostat to heat, walk away without a second thought, but then you realize that your home isn’t heating up. In fact, you can’t even hear your furnace kick on at all. It looks like you’ve run into a problem, and there’s no clear sign of what it is. Let’s help you figure out what’s going on.

You may need furnace repair in Albuquerque, NM depending on what the problem is. This is a list of the most common issues that you can expect to run into as a furnace owner and what it means for your repairs.

Old, Clogged Air Filters

Air filtration is the first thing you should look at. If your air filters are clogged and dirty, your furnace will have a hard time pulling air. Without pulling enough air, your furnace simply won’t run. Changing out the filter could be enough to remedy the situation.

After you change your air filter, give your furnace a little while to try and kick on. Change the thermostat, then switch it back to heat to tell your furnace it’s time to try again. If you still don’t hear it kick on, you may have run into a larger problem and require a service call.

Thermostat Not Reading the Correct Temperature

Even if your wiring is perfect, your thermostat itself could have a hard time reading the temperature of the room. If it thinks it’s five degrees hotter than it actually is, then your thermostat won’t communicate with the furnace and tell it to kick on.

Heat Exchanger Malfunction or Failure

Your heat exchanger is critical for your furnace, but it’s also a hazard at the same time. If there are any visible cracks on your heat exchanger, you need to leave the property ASAP and contact a professional. Your heat exchanger could be leaking carbon monoxide into your home.

Heat exchanger damage or failure can happen even if there’s no visible damage or cracking on the exterior of the unit. If you can’t figure out what’s wrong with your furnace, it could be the heat exchanger.

Faulty or Aged Wiring

Wiring goes bad over time. It’s nobody’s fault, it just happens. Bad wiring could result in a miscommunication between your thermostat and the furnace, or it could be an entirely broken wire that sparks a potential fire hazard.

It’s impossible to diagnose over a blog post, but if wiring is the problem, you need to turn off your thermostat entirely and call a professional. You never want to mess around with faulty wires (and it is absolutely not a DIY type of fix).
