Should You Ever Open Your AC Up?

Jun 13, 2022

This is a tricky question, but one with a simple solution that homeowners might not agree with right off the bat. We’d say the answer to this is “no,” but we at least want to explain ourselves and give anyone who might disagree a chance to understand why that is.

We don’t think there’s anything wrong with a homeowner learning about their air conditioning technology by seeing the insides of an AC unit. In fact, many training programs for HVAC certifications have this somewhere included in the program. It’s important to understand how air conditioning works if you want to know when there’s a problem, or learn to be more efficient with your energy consumption. However, doing this to your own air conditioning might prove to be a bit of a problem.

Let’s talk about why, when it comes to air conditioning repair in Albuquerque, NM, you should probably never open your AC unit.

The Risks of Opening Your AC

Let’s start with the basics. Why would we say that you should never open up your air conditioner? After all, it is your property, and you should be able to do whatever you want with it, right?

We won’t argue with that. You are allowed to do whatever you want to your AC unit, but doing whatever you want might not be the smartest choice, even if it is possible.

If your air conditioner is protected by a warranty, that warranty can be voided pretty much immediately when you open it up. This means you’ll be held liable for any repairs regardless of how little interaction you’ve had with your system.

Also, if you aren’t extremely familiar with your air conditioning technology, you could be making the problem worse over time. Don’t interact with any technology that you’re not familiar with, this is a general rule that we encourage people to live by.

You Probably Won’t See Much

The other unfortunate reality of opening your air conditioner up, is the fact that it’s not entirely visible from that area. In fact, there’s also an indoor air conditioning component as well as an outdoor one, so at most, you’re only seeing half of the system for all of the risks involved.

We recommend a few other resources if you’d like to get a glimpse at air conditioning technology, or if you’re trying to learn about your AC system.

Look for Resources Online to Learn More

Do you know what’s more helpful when you’re trying to learn about your air conditioner than opening up your unit? Looking online! There are amazing resources, from videos to guides with pictures, that talk about the different components of your air conditioning unit. You can even search online with the model number of your own air conditioner to find a very specific guide to show you the parts and how it functions.

This is great because it keeps you disconnected from any potential harms that can occur with your own air conditioning system. You’ll quickly learn about how your AC unit works, without risking breaking anything or hurting yourself in the process.
